Professional Development Meeting
"Kanban Cards"
Presented by Andy Pattantyus, President, Strategic Modularity, Inc.
Wednesday, November 7th, 2007
Holiday Inn Torrance
Seminar Topic: Kanban Cards
Have you ever wondered how to "successfully" implement a Kanban system to simplify your scheduling? If so, then this meeting is for you. We are fortunate to have an experienced practitioner/consultant to bring us a practical presentation on Kanban Cards.
Kanban is the Japanese term for "sign" or "signboard". A Kanban card is a signaling device that gives authorization for movement of materials in a factory.
There are two kinds of Kanban: production Kanban (or Make Kanban) and withdrawal Kanban (or Move Kanban). The proper implementation of Kanban effectively establishes a pull system on the plant floor. Kanban scheduling systems are among the simplest, effective and inexpensive means for manufacturing production and inventory control. Often, the Kanban system can effectively replace a computerized system, lowering costs, and improving efficiency.
This presentation describes the implementation of this paperless method of controlling material flow on the plant floor. The attendee will be taken through the entire process, including:
- The analysis and database that needs to be developed using several part characteristics and variable material usage parameters,
- Physical clean-up/organization and establishment of a specific place for each part,
- Techniques used to generate the initial set-up of the kanbans and printing of the cards, and
- Training required of the employees to run, understand and maintain the system.
The challenges of maintaining this system as business situations change will also be covered. This talk is geared towards materials professionals, operations professionals and industrial engineers who strive to improve material flow.
This presentation will be followed in May with a plant tour of one local company that Andy worked with to establish Kanbans. At that tour, you will get to see the Kanban system in action.
