May Professional Development Meeting:
Latest Hot Topics in Supply Chain Research
Speaker:  Jonathan Thatcher, Director of Research, APICS & APICS Foundation

Note:  This event has been cancelled.  On May 26th, APICS Research Director Jonathan Thatcher presents a research sampler covering the latest hot topics in practitioner supply chain research. They are:

(1) Chronic Disruption - Why we tolerate this common but poorly studied risk and what we can do to get rid of it.

(2) Sustainability - What are the gaps between senior management and practitioner management and why do they persist? Why do they cause practical difficulties such as help prevent robust sustainability measurement and prioritization? And why this adds up to a lack of maximizing the benefits of sustainable investments. This is research APICS currently jointly develops with PwC.

(3) Sentiment - Sentiment is another flow along supply chains, including product-information-finance flows. Sentiment flows as we extend trust to each partner in the supply chain. Sentiment acts as a gatekeeper to other flows and is a component of supply chain risk management practice. With the rise of Big Data and Business Intelligence (BI), supply chain sentiment now becomes an objective topic. Of course subjective human sentiment stands alongside, creating a sometimes conflicting quantitative and qualitative view.

Each topic provides the supply chain practitioner with insight, take-away ideas, and survey data (where available) on which to judge their supply chain management practice. These topics are part of ʺsoftʺ supply chain practice where soft means difficult to measure or observe, but important nonetheless for achieving supply chain excellence. APICS research applies hard research practices, in primary and secondary research, to each of these areas and will present them to you.
